Goodbye February

March is almost upon us all. WOOOHOO. January and February make up the meat of winter in my books, so now that they have come and gone I am starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Brisk mornings with dry road and sun on the horizon are on my mind. I can't wait for the times that I will be in my car at 5am with coffee and a bagel in hand as I drive to meet my friends for a bike ride. It's going to be great.

Today has been a nice all around day. I stayed up last night to watch the Cuse take down Villanova so I ended up sleeping in until about 9 this morning which was nice for a change. Then I lounged around and watched some tv while I woke myself up and ate some good food that my parents had laying around. So nice to not have to rely on Wegmans for my meals...saved me a ton of money!

It was a bit of a struggle for me to take it easy today. Since I know that this upcoming week will be the last big push for the audit season I know that training hours will be far and few between. I am going to have over an hour commute each morning, and I will have to be at work at 8:30 which means I need to be on the road by 7:30. I told my coach I'd be able to do a little more training today, like getting on the bike or something but she reminded me that this week was designed to be a rest week! That's the beauty of having someone helping you find your way in this triathlon game. If I didn't have someone to remind me to rest I probably would have over done it and not recovered enough for whats ahead. Well in the end I abided by Coach's orders and did my 60 min run and called it a day. Now I am relaxing on the cough typing away while I watch team USA try and take down Canada. Canada is currently up 1 but hopefully the boys in blue can make a bit of a stand in the second period and make it interesting.

I am going to leave you know so I can put my feet up and maybe even close my eyes and see if I can catch a bit of a nap before I head back to Rochester. I need to get their early so I can get as much sleep as possible!

Oh yeah I cleaned my tri bike really good today. It's looks awesome! And in a couple weeks it will be getting a bit of a makeover as some paint chips are going to be taken care of. I won't get into how the chips got their but let's just say that I did not cause them...I weight about 148 and my father well he doesn't and he decided to hop on one day...needless to say the gears were not in the correct position and book..nothing bad was done just some chipping...it will be taken care of without a doubt!

OOhhh its getting close to race season boys and girls...I can hear Cuse Tri talking about his taper already. hahaha

Later,
MjC

Talk about rest
Talk about zen tri and contacting him
Cleaned my bike
Did some work..ugh
Ate some good food..
Took a lot of food and cleaning supplies from the parents place.

Awesome Day - 20 min TT, Bike Fit, and the Cuse...

First off I must ask what is it then when I have the opportunity to sleep that I have such a tough time doing it. And then when I want to keep sleeping or sleep more..I just can't because of work. Well anyways I had the chance to get a good nights sleep last night and I was up about 5 times during the next...figures huh. Anyway, I ended up getting some good rest from about 4-8am and then once it hit 8 I just couldn't keep lying around so I got out of bed, made some coffee and drank my pre-workout shake that consists of a banana, 1 scoop of chocolate protein, and some ice. Then watched the end of last weeks Simpsons episode on Hulu. I love Saturday mornings when I don't have to work. Quite the change from the previous 4 weeks Saturdays that began at 4:30 am on the bike. Well once I was up and going I hit the trainer for a bike workout that included a 20 minute TT. The TT went alright. I was not super happy but I made it through without bonking out or anything. I do not want to make excuses but I just felt worn out. I had swam the night before at 7pm and I think I am still lacking on sleep since the past week was just brutal workwise. Anywho, the power readings went up a bit from the previous TT, so if nothing else, that is good. After the TT I tried to take on the task of cleaning my bathroom a little bit. Having not actually "lived" in my apartment for the past 2 months, things are a bit messy...and that's saying it nicely. It truly is a representation of the classic "bro pad" as my good buddy Hohman would say. That needs to change if I ever want people to come over...I think if a girl ever walked in, I could look like Brad Pitt and she would still be running as fast as possible in the other direction. Well the silver lining in this all is that my OCD kicked in and I scrubbed the heck out of the bathroom floor, sink, and toilet. The transformation is not complete yet, but it is a lot better than before. My mother has graciously given me some Mr Clean magic erasers that will take away all the nasty soap scum and other discoloring features of the tub, as well as the discoloring that is currently residing in my sink. Its a process, but one that will get done, and in no time my bro pad will be a thing of beauty...especially when my bikes get located front and center. Some people like to buy nice paintings and hang them on their walls. Well not for this guy, my works of art include 2 wheels, a set of aero bars, and a dura ace drive train. Ohhh the beauty of it all!

After the little cleaning fiasco I packed up the outback (which took me like 45 minutes because I had so much darn nasty stinky clothing + bikes) and headed to Geneva Cycle Center for my RETUL fit. Geneva cycle is legit. I was led there by many people including my good buddy Cuse Tri and my Coach Ironmamma Eggers. (BTW Mike and I now have matching TT helmets, we did not plan this I swear. I just mentioned today that I was thinking about getting a white and silver one...not going to lie I wanted this color because its the color that Chris Lieto wears and if you haven't figured it out I am a bit obsessed with him at the moment. You can now find me wearing both his TT helmet of choice and his cycling shoes of choice, DMT's if you care. Where was I...oh yeah well I wanted the white and silver Giro TT and I wanted to see what people thought and low and behold that's what Mike had picked up! Well I was not changing my color preference and after getting the OK from Mike that we could match..well I was super stocked to say the least when Geneva had it in stock! It is now currently residing on my head, no joke. I might sleep in it tonight) Back to the fitting. It was a thing of beauty. It was like the equivalent of a woman going to a day spa for a full on pedicure manicure and mud bath with a massage to finish. It was sweet. I had two bike experts pouring over my bike and I. I had sensors hooked up all over. I had to shave parts of my body to make them stick, I saw a stick figure represent my every movement down to the millimeter. It was so cool. We confirmed that I am very flexible, that my left leg is shorter than my right, and that my knees do not match which has caused two different muscular developments to occur on each leg. It was pretty cool to see this. So in order to balance things out each leg was looked at individually. The left leg low and behold was fixed with a simple tweek of my cleat. It is now fully locked in and looks great. A shim was also added and that was that..the left leg is good to go. The right leg however was a bit different. By no means was it way out of wack, it was just different, I have a bit of a bend instead of a straight up and down motion. That is not an issue, its barely noticeable even on the RETUL machine. The key was to be able to adjust the seat position into a height where the left leg would not get compromised. Therefore we first lowered the seat and then subsequently raised it back up about half of what it was before. This lead to the closest compromise that we could get which allowed both legs to work to their fullest in combination with each other. I have no idea if what I just said made sense, but I am to tired to try and re-word it right now, so take it for what it is. All in all what basically happened is that contrary to what I "thought" I needed...my bars were raised up for less of a drop and my seat was lowered just a little bit. This has given me a much better comfort level, which is going to be needed for the half and full iron distance races. Instead of feeling like my upper body was falling off the bike, something that was very uncomfortable, I know feel very much at ease and "cradled" if I can use that term. Either way it was a great time, Just about 4 hours of full attention was given to me. Needless to say I will be back for tweaks and back for fitting on the road bike, as well as some touch up work that needs to be done to the bike...

So with that said, it was a great day. I now am back home with the parents in PY. I will be staying up late and watching the Cuse game tonight because I can. I do not have to work tomorrow and I can sleep in as long as I want...SLEEP IN! How crazy is that! And tomorrow's planned training is just a 1 hr jaunt outside. A nice little endurance run. Hopefully the weather will be semi-agreeable. It will be a good end to a tough week. Next weeks brings a about and hour commute each day, but nothing that I can't handle. It's the last week of my audit duty. I go into tax next week where i will be working in the office every day. Normality will ensure. Who knows I might even be able to go to my beloved Yoga class taught by Ironmomma! That's be so great.

Alright time to get ready for the Cuse game...CUSE IN THE HOUSE OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD!!

I know my boy Cuse Tri will be watching it!

I'm a Very Lucky Guy

I take things for granted all the time. Things always seems worse, or not as great when time to reflect is not taken. When I look back at the times I felt the most angry or down, their always not as bad as they actually seem. The heat of the moment amplifies feelings. With that said I am feeling good this morning. I have a long week of work ahead of me, hopefully one of my last truly out of control busy weeks. But not to worry, my training this week is going to be recovery based with some tests near the end. No not pen and paper tests, those darn CPA exams are over for good! These tests are ones that included how fast I can swim 400 yards and how fast I can pedal in 20 minutes....I like these tests!!!

On to a recap of my weekend, since I can only imagine you are all dying to hear it. All in all it was a pretty good weekend. Even though work consumed about 12 hours of my time I was still able to fit in a 5 hours of bike riding, and 2.5 hours of running. Saturday started off at 4am with a 3.5 hr bike ride which gave me the chance to finish watching Season 1 of the The Wire, a very good TV Show that was on HBO. Now I just have to find out how to get the rest of the seasons without having to buy all those DVD boxsets, there like 50 bucks each...maybe I can borrow them from somebody, that'd be cool! I also caught up on a couple episodes of Mad Men Season 3 sans iTunes. So that was that, I cranked out 3.5 hours on the bike and ate a ton of food to fuel the ride. This is something I am working pretty hard at. I never used to eat a lot of food during exercise because simply its not always the most fun thing on your stomach, and secondly I never really worked out at a level of exertion that caused for on-the-go fueling. But as they say "More during, less after" something that is very true, and something that I work at every day. Since a 3.5 hr bike ride takes well 3.5 hours my 4:30am start got me off the bike at 8am. I was "supposed" to be at work around 9ish. A strict time was not mandatory but its kind of implied. Well I missed the boat on that a bit, but I had let the people know in advance. They'll get over I think, I mean we did all end up staying until 6 at night on a Saturday, busy season or not, after a long week of late nights a saturday at 6pm at work is not where anyone really wants to be. Oh yeah, why was I a bit tardy? Because I had to squeeze a 30 min run off the bike in of course! When else can you simulate the way your legs might feel coming off the bike leg of a half ironman!! Ha.

So Saturday came and went, I was able to catch up with my dad and have some dinner with him at Wegmans which was greatly appreciated. He even brought me some presents like my taxes forms to sign so that I can receive my warmly welcomed Government refund check, YESYESYES. And even some new pants from my favorite pants place in the world...BONOBOS. Check them out, they are pretty sweet! And if you ever need a pair of these killer pants just use the partner code "Curbonobos" and enjoy a nice first time buyer discount on good ole Matt Curbeau. NEW PANTS

Sunday was an awesome day as well, really awesome actually. I had the pleasure of getting an early morning 2 hr run in with a new training partner. His name is Phil and he has beaten me in numerous races. I thought it would be a good time to start training with him and figuring out his winning recipe, or at least that his knee was bothering him so I now know his weak spot..haha, just kidding of course. In all seriousness it was really awesome to get out there and run with someone my age who is in to the same darn stuff that I am. We really have a lot in a common and even though we had really only chatted for a few minutes in total at various races, their wasn't a moment of silence to be had during our 2hrs of running. He ended up going for another half an hour since he is ramping up for the Boston Marathon, however I peeled off at 2 and called it a morning. After that I boogyed on over to work till 1. Work was well...work. The time passed quickly and it felt like nothing got done even though we were all busting our butts. Just the nature of the job i guess. It's going to be a rough week ahead but somehow it will all get done, hopefully. Then at least I can move on to the next job and be one step closer to the spring. And speaking of being a step closer to the spring. The best part about Sunday was that my good friend Josh called me up around 2 and told me he wanted to ride OUTSIDE! I was fully on board. I quickly took to assembling my bike, which is a bit of a chore for this guy. I am not the most proficient around my bike yet. I have a tremendous amount to learn. But I did my best getting the brake pads to fit right and all that stuff. The hard part was changing the whole tire and tube since the tire was a training one I had previously been using on the trainer and it was so run down that it probably would have tore open the second it touched the ground. Then when I took that off I realized that the actual tube was in rough shape. It was still holding air but who knows for how much longer. So I did my best to change the thing but needless to say Josh rode to my place and helped me finish the task...what a great guy. And off we were on a absolutely beautiful BONUS Day as middle school Football coach used to say...or "A beautiful day in the Finger Lakes as another one would yell loudly even when it was thunder and lightning with the threat of a hurricane approaching..still beautiful in that crazy man's mind! I mean outside on bikes in February, it doesn't get much better than that! We rode to Fairport and then back to Brighton and even had a nice detour on the canal path where we had to walk our bikes for like a half a mile because of the snow...ONLY IN UPSTATE NY! But it was all good, an absolutely awesome way to spend Sunday afternoon. A really good head clearer of all the stress that winter and work brings. Hopefully their will be more of these days to come. And btw Josh gets to spend more days on the bike OUTSIDE this week as he is heading south to spend a good few days riding his butt off! I am so jealous! And would definitely be going with him if it wasn't for the time of year it is with work. He's knows that to, but oh well there will be more times, definitely more times!!

And the best part of Sunday was that Josh had me over to his house. I was dropping his Mtn Bike he had let me use back in like October, haha it was residing in my apartment for a while. But anyway, when I was dropping it over he invited me in and we hung out and watched bike movies and everything. His awesome wife Satera even brought me home dinner from Wegmans! So cool. It was just so nice to be able to spend time with great people. Josh also gave me all his bike magazines that he had already read, which is way cool of him since these magazines are all like 40 bucks an issue, haha. Great night, so much better than being all cooped up in my apartment alone...

Well as I post this I am happy. I got a pool workout in this morning, Im dresssed, Im eating breakfast, and it looks like I will be into work early today. Hopefully things will get accomplished and life will be good. I am sure I will be utterly miserable over the next few days but I will not let it get to me. I am bound and determined to truck on. I have so many good people around me. Saturday and Sunday certainly showcased that with my dad coming to see me for dinner, bring me cool work pants my mom suprised me with, and then getting to go for a run with a new training partner who will hopefully let me keep tagging along with him, and then even going for a bike ride and hanging out for the evening with a great friend who I didn't even know last year. Things are good, things are always good. You sometimes just have to zoom out and take it all in via a new perspective. I think its very true that in all aspects of life if you analyze something to much, or look at something to closely you start to miss things. You miss out on whats really going on in the BIG PICTURE. Because ultimately our life is one big picture with many intricate little details making that up. If we can focus on the beauty of the whole instead of the flaws in the details we will be much better off...and you know those flaws, well when we are in a better mindset those flaws don't exist anymore, their just pieces of the puzzle. Pieces that are extremely important in making everything come together. So when life is tough and it doesn't seem like their is a light at the end of the tunnel, step back and put things into perspective. I know that makes me feel better and I am working on it everyday.

Big things, good things...they are all closer than you think!

Train Hard, Train Smart....TRAIN THIS!

Out,

-MjC

PS I think that my blog posting is a direct correlation to how I am feeling. The more I post with actual meaning, the better I am feeling and the more sleep I have had. This week is a rest week where I will hopefully use it to my advantage seeing how work is going to keep me late. I should still be able to get a lot of sleep in (well relatively, seeing how since Jan 5th, I've been living on about 5hrs of sleep a night. I've held up well and knock on wood (my desk is wood and I am knocking loudly) I will continue to do the same. And I hope all the rest of you stay healthy and injury free as well.

...

It's truly a blessing bestowed upon each and everyone of us that every day is a new beginning. You don't have to wait until new years to take up a new resolution. Start right now and put your thoughts into action. Make something happen, don't sit around and let opportunities pass you by. I can attest that it is all to easy to just go with the flow and just try to survive. However, I really believe that everyone is much happier when they make their own path, take charge of the present so that they can get to where they want to be in the future. When I take the time to think about how each new morning presents me with the opportunity to see how perfect I can be in my execution. Can I eat the right foods? Can I hit my training goals? Can I really do a great job at work? Can I resist the temptation to buy that cool gadget or tri gear I just saw, so that later on I can save up and buy the new bike or pay for the trip to compete.

February 17th...really?

Another Friday is nearing its end for me. I have a big wegmans salad bar meal in front of me, a refrigerator full of good foods for the weekend, and I am finally getting the chance to watch this weeks episode of lost. Life is good at the moment. I will be heading to bed around 7 and getting up at 4 and on the bike by 430. 3.5 hours on the bike and half hour run to follow, then its back to work for the rest of the day. With the passing of each day I am one step closer to my destiny. Step by step, day by day. Good things are in my cards, and YOURS. Can you feel it?

Also, here is a great article my Coach sent to all of the team this week, I highly recommend taking a read through. http://kerriewlad.blogspot.com/

So if anyone wants to iChat or something while I am on the bike in the morning, shoot me a message...haha

Otherwise sleep tight!

Catch ya on the other side.

Going Long on the Treadmill

Here is my first video of my run form, Ever. My friend Kim was gracious enough to humor me by taking this video from all angles at the tail end of my long run today. She also ran next to me for her 1:20 run which made the dreaded treadmill time so much more bearable! Anyways, I thought that this was pretty cool. Hopefully the upload works, all comments welcome.

Catch ya later.

Happy Valentines Day

Valentines Day 2010 has led me to Starbucks at 6am. I was able to get to bed around 7:30PM last night which afforded me a good deal of sleep, which was much needed. Why then am I back up at 6am the next day? Well to answer your question, its because I have the first day off from work that I have had in the year 2010. It has certainly been a rough month and a half of work. But since today is all mine, I am taking advantage of every minute I can. A nice swim at the Y this morning is going to get me off to a great start. Then I am going to make the trek back to my apartment, grab the running shoes, and hit the treadmill at Midtown. Luckily I am going to be joined by a fellow teammate at the gym, which will make the 1:45 on the treadmill SOOO much more bearable. Running in the same place all day can be well...less than awesome. Haha but I do it because I love it and because I want to do it. Waking up early, running on treadmills, spinning inside, this is the stuff that gets me through the day. It keeps my fuel tanks from hitting E. I can't really explain how I have been able to keep going all winter. I know that I am not getting the sleep I would like, and their have been times when my workouts have been less than expected because so. But I have really worked hard to minimize these. Working yourself and your body to exhaustion when there's nothing in the tank is just not smart. It always ends up in disaster. I mean if you need to sleep in, then you go and work all day all the while saying you'll "get it in at night", then you get home kind of late and you just go through the paces of your planned workout. What benefit did you get? Sure, you "got it in" but what about the next morning when you do wake up early. Your now not properly rested and then that workout suffers. So basically, the triathletes attitude of hitting goals and markers has now forced you to screw up not one but two workouts. In my books, I have learned that its far better to have one awesome workout that 2 sub par's. It's hard at times to see the big picture because on the whole we triathletes are so focused on the here and now. But in reality its just such a long process. A good process don't get me wrong. But its just demanding both physically and mentally. So now when I know I didn't get enough sleep or just am not feeling it, I am very much more attune to calling it a day and waking up anew the next, ready to take on the world.

2010 Race Update:

I am excited to announce that the New England (New Haven to Boston) Ragnar 24hr race has been added to my list. One of my good buddies CJ whom I went to school with in London, and lives in Boston, contacted me about this and I simply cannot pass up the chance to hang out with him and his buddies for a 24 hr endurance event. It is going to be awesome. Here is the website for the event...pretty rad in my opinion. I am really looking forward to it!

Saturday Evening

Got outta work by 3ish today. Got to clean my apartment a little, do some work on my bicycle's, and pick some dinner up at Wegman's. Love it. It's 7 now, watching some psych on hulu and going to try and hit the sack early. Its been a long day that started before 4 this morning. Tomorrow brings me to a nice 1:45 run, a swim, and a light recovery spin....booyah
First off, my new bike shoes are awesome. Since I was kept at work until past 10 on Thursday night I was unable to get up early on Friday for an hours spin, so I decided to get that in after I was out of work on Friday night. All went well yesterday and I was back at my place around 6ish with my new shoes all ready to go. I am also going to be getting fit on my bike this Sunday. These new kicks and a new fit should hopefully have me feeling very comfortable about my bike. Lately I've just not had that. And when I'm on my bike for more than 3 hours at a time, especially in inside on a trainer, well...I want to be comfortable.

Well that brings me to today. It's Saturday morning, or late late night Friday depending on if your a night-owl who loves the bar scene. Why am I up at 4am on Saturday? Well its so that I can start my bike ride at ~430. I've got a 3:20 ride and a 30 min run to tackle before I have to head into work around 9ish. It's going to be tight time-wise but what the heck, I'll make it happen. Imagine what this will all be like when I get to start working normalish hours again! I cannot freakin wait!

Alright, for now i am off to get ready to ride. More post to come If I can make the time later today.

See Ya!

New Shoes New Shoes!

Quick Mid-Day posting. I just saw via fed-ex online tracking that my new DMT bike shoes came in today. I am out at a client's site today for work but I will be picking these babies up tonight from the office. Hopefully they are the right size. But either way it will be awesome to check them out in person.

Update:
I picked up the new kicks at the office on my way home tonight. First thing I noticed when I pulled them out of the box was how awesome they looked, and then after that when I slipped them on I was overcome with happiness as they fit! They fit! Now I just need to get them all set up for my pedals and everything will be all set!

Yey!

Now I just need to learn how to mount this babies to some cleats. If anyone has any tips let me know. Otherwise I will just find some time to swing by my favorite bike shop in the world, Towpath Bike Shop!

Superbowl Sunday

The Superbowl is going to be played tonight. In the past probably would have been real happy for the big game. However since I probably actually watched a cumulative of one full football game the whole season, which explains why I won 3 games in fantasy league the whole year. Needless to say I just do not have any investment in the NFL. Now that I think about it, the same thing can be said for last year. Last year had me studying studying day and night, so Sunday afternoons when I did not have to be at work were like bonus hours that I could just cram my brain with accounting facts. Last year on Superbowl Sunday I can vividly remember studying right through the big game and then checking the internet at about 2am after I finished studying to see who had won the game. No big deal though, I again had no real investment in the game. Anyway, as of right now the cable is not even hooked up in the apartment.

Instead of watching the game and feeding my face you will most likely find me at the Y getting some laps in. (I'll feed my face after that :) Not that I wouldn't love to head home and watch the big game with my Dad but it would just be really hard to head home after I get out of work today and then have to head back early in the morning on Monday. I need my sleep and with work being the way it is right now, any chances I have to train at reasonable hours and get enough recovery sleep...well I just need to take advantage of that. With that said, its a little after 4:30 and I am getting prepped to hit the bike for a 40 min recovery spin followed by a brisk 1:40 run outside. The treadmill is not even an option today since the gym does not open until 7AM. Not that I am complaining, the treadmill is well....not my favorite. Haha. On the bright side of all this I let myself have a nice big bowl of the new wheaties fuel cereal as a snack in the middle of the night as well as some nice powerbar energy bites with the breakfast i am having right now. I'll need good fuel for my workout this morning. Gotta get it in before 9. Then rest up for a nice swim in the PM. Hopefully the pool is pretty empty with everyone else home watching the football game.

Alright, time to fire up Season 1 of the Wire that I just obtained from co-worker. I've heard good things about this show and I'm sure it won't disappoint. Reviews to come for sure.

My socks smell

I am sitting here in front of my computer at 4:30 at my apartment, not at the office. First time in a month i've had a saturday afternoon and night off of work. Much needed. The team and I headed out from the office around 3pm and on the way home I swung by the mall but nothing was appealing. Dick's didn't even have anything that struck my fancy. I guess when the only things that matter are biking, swimming, running, and food related..that narrows the tastes. Haha. Btw, I've ordered new bike shoes and they should be in on Thursday. European sizing so I might have to return due to sizing issues but thats ok, I figured i'd order them early in the season so that I could exchange them with ease well before I hit the open roads. I'll be sure to post some pics when they are ready. But in case your interested, they are DMT's, worn by Chris Lieto himself. They are technically not TRI related but they have velcro straps instead of the typical cycling latches so they look they will be pretty killer. I have really been looking forward to getting a new pair of bike shoes since my only pair right now are the first ones I ever bought. Although they are by no means low quality they are just not what I would get now. I put a lot of miles on the bike so I want a good quality set of shoes that will keep the feet feeling fresh and transfer max power to the pedals!

On another note, this morning I was able to get a good 3hr ride in. My cadence was high and my power was steady, I was pleased. I found myself at many times wishing the 3hrs would last longer. I am dead serious about that. Even though I am restriceted to being indorrs on a trainer it still is just awesome. I knew that when I got out of the saddle I would have to start getting ready to go to work. Shower, and all the stuff...I just really wished I had say 3 more hours, or...a nice long run to get to. But oh well, those days are ahead of me and I can't wait for them. Big things are coming!

So your probably wondering why I titled my blog "my socks smell". Well its because they do. I was wearing my 2xu recovery socks since I rode pretty long this morning and when I took my shoes off at home they just stunk! I guess its time to get them to the washer. As a matter of fact its time to get all my stuff to the washer and dryer. Hopefully I'll be able to get to my cuz's to get my bike gear all cleaned up, I don't think I have any more clean bibs or shorts anywhere.
